My friend Laura has decided to help with the fundraising for Running for Congo – she has asked me to publicise this event that she is putting on to help me as I close in on 12 marathons in 12 months.
Charity Speed Dating – Wednesday 3rd November
-DIRECT MESSAGE FROM LAURA-
I am looking for 40 fun-loving and philanthropic ladies and gents to sign up for an evening of charity speed dating. Having organised a few of these events before, I can guarantee you that it’s a very lighthearted, hilarious and sociable affair, especially given the fact it’s all in the name of charity. The profile of participants (based on previous events) is age range 25-33, predominantly professionals and, most importantly, all up for a good time to support a good cause.
The format is simple – an evening of 3 minute dates where every boy meets every girl, with a couple of bar breaks in between. Each participant receives an email a few days after the event to inform them of any love matches 😉
The price is a mere £8 – a bargain considering speed dating tickets usually cost £20 upwards, and every penny goes to ‘Women for Women International’, a charity which helps women survivors of war to rebuild their lives. They work mostly in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This whole event came about because my friend Chris is very near to completing the incredible feat of running 12 marathons in 12 months, one of which he (against all advice to the contrary!) ran in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While there, he met a number of women affected by the ongoing conflict and heard their stories of being raped repeatedly, being forced from their homes and being made to watch as their husbands and children were tortured or killed in front of them. His story is inspiring, and while the purpose of the marathon-running and the fun events is to raise as much money for the charity as possible, it is equally important to Chris to draw people’s attention to the horrors of the conflict in the DEC. So, before you sign up for the fun part, take a little look at his trip and the reasons which compel him to keep running and keep communicating what he’s witnessed. https://runforcongo.wordpress.com/page/3/
To book a speed dating place..
If you’re female, go to Chris’ fundraising page http://www.justgiving.com/runforcongo, sponsor him £8 (gift aid it), leave just your initials (for anonymity), and in the comments column write ‘speed dating – 1 female place’.
If you’re male, go to http://www.firstgiving.com/12marathons12months, sponsor him £8 ($12.60), leave just your initials and note in the comments column, ‘speed dating – 1 male place’. (see webpage for explanation why this is for a separate charity!)
IMPORTANT – Once you’ve donated, drop me a quick email at email@example.com to give me your full name. This is also so that I have a contact for you to get in touch prior to the event. (I’m on holiday till 25th October so don’t worry if you don’t get a response till then).
Places are limited to 20 male and 20 female places – booking essential and get in early! – I always end up having to turn people away.
Arrive at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, upstairs at the Abbey bar, Victoria. Closest tube Victoria or St James Park. http://www.theabbeyvictoria.com <http://www.theabbeyvictoria.com/>
Please email me with any questions – firstname.lastname@example.org
Oh, and of course donations are welcome even if you’re not swayed by the speed dating 🙂
